From feature to need

Why customer focus makes the difference in the railway environment.

How can real added value be created in the highly regulated rail sector? Shifting the focus towards specific customer needs provides a clear answer.

In railway projects, the framework is often clearly defined. Public tenders specify both the problem and the solution in advance, and the contract is usually awarded to the most economically advantageous bidder. Construction companies have little scope to make additional value visible, for example through alternative bids or special proposals.

At the same time, many players in the railway environment – public transport operators as well as mainline railways – face challenges that extend beyond individual projects. These include increasing requirements for availability and reliability, limited personnel and material resources, high cost pressure and a desire for greater predictability, transparency and robust decision-making foundations.

This is precisely where the Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group applies a broader perspective by moving away from feature-oriented presentation of individual solutions and towards a consistent focus on actual customer needs. The decisive question is not which functions a product offers, but which problem it solves sustainably.

The RSRG is testing this approach together with customers in a pilot project in the German market. The focus is on real questions arising from operations and maintenance. Solutions are not developed in isolation, but in close dialogue with users and under real operating conditions.

This needs-based approach also makes the RSRG’s portfolio of expertise easier to understand, from engineering know-how and operational experience to innovative products and digital solutions. It shows why the RSRG is the Partner of Choice.

Alongside its core project and machinery business, the RSRG is using the pilot projects to build a scalable product organisation and a sales function focused on customer benefit. This creates differentiation and new ways of achieving sustainable impact together with customers.
