Bahnbau Wels and a consortium partner win large-scale track building project contract from ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG

This March saw the start of the surface works in the upgrading of the Marchtrenk-Wels section of the Linz-Wels western line. One of the contractors on board is Bahnbau Wels, which secured the project remit in partnership with a consortium partner.

Four tracks are better than two. ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) viewed the two-track section between Linz and Wels as a bottleneck, hardly surprising as the Westbahn section between Vienna and Linz is already four-track. This project is the last major section of the 4-track upgrade to the Vienna-Wels western line. Together with a consortium partner, Bahnbau Wels won the BL5.2 surface works tender awarded by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.

This project phase comprises the construction of around 100 km of new track with some 95 points to increase route capacity and maximum track speed, and establish a link to Linz Airport. This represents added to the relevant municipalities and for the Upper Austria economic zone, and takes ecological and sound protection concerns into consideration. The projected construction time is from 2022 to 2028.

The main job scheduled for this year is the ground clearance operation. Bahnbau Wels and its consortium partner are tasked with clearing around 15 km of track and a number of points in the Wels-Marchtrenk line section by the end of the year. Temporary track and points will have to be continuously construction to maintain rail operations on the western line.

The project is to be executed by the relevant project supervisors, engineers and the construction personnel using the latest tracking laying machinery.
