JumboTec awarded contract in far north

JumboTec has frequently succeeded in landing enticing track building contracts in the far north. In spring of last year, the company won a contract as part of the Raide-Jokeri high-speed light rail project in the northern outskirts of the capital Helsinki.

As part of the project, JumboTec is responsible for the tamping work in nine new sections of line. It is using a Matisa B20 narrow gauge tamper (1000 mm track gauge) to carry out the work. The initial deployments took place in mid-September last year. Carrying out transports between the deployment sites proved challenging. As some construction phases had not yet been completed on the line meaning these were not continuously negotiable, the machines had to be repeated loaded onto low-loaders and carried to the next single-track point. A total of four intermediate transports were necessary between Espoo and the light rail depot in Helsinki.

One aspect that should be highlighted is the outstanding collaboration between the client, NRC Group / Raide-Jokeri, and the JumboTec machine crew. It meant they could rapidly respond to any changes, and work together in devising solutions.

The tamping work was completed to the utmost satisfaction of the client. The team was even able to complete the work for large parts of the optional light rail depot in Helsinki. The various sections were handed over to the client on schedule, and with the usual high level of quality.

To be continued: This summer a number of further sections were scheduled for completion by JumboTec’s tampers. Once again, the Matisa B20 was deployed up in the far north as part of the Raide-Jokeri high-speed light rail project.
