A personal report from the new district manager in Dresden

The start to Rhomberg Sersa Deutschland’s (RSD) Süßen project did not go quite to plan. However, that was no reason for RSD to stick its head in the sand. Instead it re-evaluated and planned, and got the project back on track not least due to the countless outstanding employees. Torsten Schmidt, district manager, imparts some personal insights:

“The 1 November 2019 was the start of a new, exciting chapter in my professional career. During the course of the restructuring of Rhomberg Sersa Deutschland, I was given the opportunity to assume the lead of our Dresden site. My anticipation was as great as my expectations that certain challenges awaited me.

At the same time, we won a submission certainly caught my attention: The Süßen construction project – with a scope of approx. 3.5 million euro, with the laying of subsurface cable ducts forming the core aspect. Construction manager Steffen Reinhardt and the Rabending crew were tasked with executing the project. The initial preparations commenced and the construction was due to start in February 2020. I monitored the preparatory works, and had to concluded that various problems had arisen due the start phase, a situation exacerbated by the unexpected loss of the construction manager.   It was necessary to intervene.

It was during this phase that Plan B was jointly conceived with Business Unit Manager Marcus Kern and Olli Grodd, together with CEO Georg Gabler Plan B. Our construction manager Ralf Krüger from our Halle office, possessed the necessary experience to implement this plan. He was therefore relieved of all other responsibilities, so that he could take the helm in Süßen.

Even if the start itself did not proceed according to plan, our efforts paid off nevertheless because as time progressed, and with the support of the AG and the building inspectors, we were able to perform the works in line with the schedule.

We were able to gain the services of Jochen Gierig to assist with our additional contracts management. His social skills and technical expertise were the perfect addition to our team on-site.

All of this again showed what has to be at the core of our work: our employees, and this brings me renewed strength every day. My thanks to Ralf and Jochen, and to Martin Rabending and his team, and thanks to all the employees who were part of the Süßen success story.
