Resource conservation through the reuse of large-surface slabs

Large-surface slabs, originally installed between grooved rails in tram tracks to allow road vehicle traffic, were given a second life at the end of their initial service period.

Instead of the conventional approach of dismantling and disposing of the slabs, RSRG advocated for a sustainable reuse. After several internal discussions and proactive coordination, the slabs were successfully deployed in another project.

A total of 1,500 m² of large-surface slabs were salvaged and are now being used at a tunnel portal access road – serving as reinforcement for paths and access routes for machinery and equipment. The narrower slabs additionally function as a foundation for containers.

Thanks to this reuse, the usual concreting or asphalting could be avoided – saving both material and emissions (approx. 75 tonnes CO₂eq.).

Another advantage: the ground remains unsealed, since the slabs are laid on a permeable gravel bed.

Logistics also worked out optimally: no storage area was required between dismantling and reinstallation – coordination was carried out “on time,” saving further resources.
